about

“Only passin’ through” has music composed by pianist Mark Fitzgibbon. The band had woodshedded seven tracks for the session and had completed them well before schedule. They were going to record Miles Davis “In a silent way”, which they had been playing live, but Dave Graney asked Mark if he had any music. He taught the band the charts and this is the result. Complex and highly layered with chords. Yacht rock? Dave delivers another noir story about a drifter in a hotel room, reading a book and waiting for his life to really begin.

lyrics

he thought
one day he'd be in a hotel room and he’d start to read a book
and his life would turn around
he could see himself straighenin out
one day ,just like that
doing some martial arts, purifying his mind
he thought he would be here a while
in the dark
working his seam
then one day he would cut through
and powerful people would see him
for real
totally
he could put up with this life for a time
it wouldn't last forever
he could put up with these people and this mess
he knew he was only passing through
he never took the time to get to know anybody or anything too well
what was thepoint?
he was shootin through as soon as he could
he knew he was only passin through
he didn't waste his time lookin for signs
somethin would turn up
some world that would suit him so well
he would be a king
he wouldn't even know
he smiled at people as they reached down to pull him up
tryin to pull him back
back to life
the straight life he was quittin for good
