about

“Crime and underwear” ends the album with another very personal and autobiographical song which Dave Graney unwinds and teases out over six minutes. Its a song about losing the power to write and communicate and then getting it back, only with a new awareness of how delicately balanced the whole shithouse is. The title comes from the American newspaper mogul of the early 20th century, William Randolph Hearst, who told his writers to focus on two things, Crime and Underwear.

lyrics

I can’t speak my mind
I can’t see the day
People might hear the wrong thing
Somethin’ you don’t know you’re saying
Not everybodys here- that’s the problem- ever
Somebody died just before I started to sing this song
Then a whole bunch of people came into the room
Its like the room is moving
Like it’s a carriage on a train
It was already movin’
Some of the people – I never saw them get on
Must’ve come from above - perhaps below
Its not the same world I started with – in my mind and all around
I was walking through it
it was inside me too
Things I said were things I could say
I was throwin’ thunderbolts at will
Yeah, I used to sit down at the table and grab handfulls of the shit
I could grab handfulls of the shit
Now, I dunno
My reach is longer
My hands are soft
Now I know what I’m touchin’ and it spooks me
All I knew was the beginning now I’m fixed on the end
I was hurling thunderbolts at will
Crime and underwear
That’s what people understood
Thats what they heard best
That’s what I stick to
Crime and underwear
Its best to use a net
Make some sort of trap
Crime and underwear
Thats the key that this song is in
