We had recorded our second album for FIRE records in the UK in 1990 with our UK Coral Snakes but due to an indie distributor going under it was unreleased. I was totally fried as it was my best work and we came back to Melbourne and threw ourselves into working live. Our London bass player, Gordy Blair came over to play with us.
We did this gig opening for Bob Mould at the PrinceOf wales in St Kilda. and the songs You Wanna be There But You Don’t Wanna Travel , The United States Of Warren Oates and Jesus What’d I do were all played for the first time the night it was recorded. Also the long, improvised track Lure Of the Tropics (words from an old public domain poem) was played for the first time. Also, as we set up at the venue, we found a Hammond organ with a Leslie speaker left on the stage. Our keys player Robin Casinader commandeered it but it was sparking and smoking a bit as we left after soundcheck. (He was underneath it trying to fix it. So it was all serendipitous that the recording happened. the ABC truck was there but the headliner Bob Mould only had an acoustic guitar so they had all this gear and all these channels so it caught our performance.
The audience was mostly a strange photo grunge / surf crowd who were all gagging for Husker Du. Even Bob Mould couldn’t satisfy them as he came out thrashing his acoustic from the start. It seemed as if he hadn’t done many solo gigs before. I was dressed in a three piece white satin suit and had long hair and a beard with a curled moustache. Our music was so powerful and dynamic and the band so match fit and on the one that they couldn’t really dispute us being there though.

A lot of the other songs are from the recordings we had done in London which hadn’t come out yet.

Eventually this recording was released in 1992 as Lure Of the Tropics. At almost the same time the album that we had done in London for FIRE came out. It was called I Was The Hunter And I Was The Prey. In December 1992 we recorded Night Of The Wolverine which came out in early 1993 so we had three albums come out in a very short time.

This digital album is mainly the mix by Phil McKellar which is how it was first released. In 1996 it was remixed by Tony Cohen and several more songs were included. These are included here as the last three tracks. In retrospect we preferred the initial mix by Phil McKellar. It was more in the spirit of the live recording.

If you are purchasing a CD copy it is the re issued version with the mix by Tony Cohen. That includes all the same tracks on this digital set but ALL remixed by Tony Cohen ( and Adam Rhodes).
