Back In A Day
04:49
|
|
||
back in the day, back in the day
people say that
did you have a day?
a particular day to anchor your life
a day to pivot about
to swing out like a may pole
a legendary day
a hey day
hey!
did you have your day?
did you have a day?
did you have the day?
back inm the day
say so much – say so little
paper the room
some time bog
did you have the day?
or did you borrow one from the library like everybody else?
people walk down the street in a particular way
as if to say
yeah, back in the day
a limp, a sway, a stagger , a swagger
something happened
you guessed it
back in the day
better to say
back in a day
what would a you do back in a day?
what would a you say back in a day?
what’s a day?
it’s not the day
just a day for someone
but one day they might say “oh this is it! This is the day for me! Not just a me – actually for me!”
back in a day
back in a day
better to say
back in a day

Family Gatherings
04:25
|
|
||
here’s to all my uncles and aunties
in their prime
in their pomp
in their best cardigans and slacks and summer shifts and flatties
janglin’ their keys and eatin’ their cake from their knees
Uncle Leo on either side
two Margs as well
Mart, Park and Andy, Joan and Jan, Lynne and John, Euie and Bub,
Adie and Olive, Von and Ron and Des, Bernie and Malcolm, Mary and Celeste
dancin’ to the Hucklebuck
cryin’ to Maria Elena
Bye Bye Birdie! Tom Dooley
church and football
family gatherings
family gatherings- I ran away from them
ran away to a circus
family gatherings – they stopped at some point
they can’t happen now
now I’m older and standing at the empty fairground
I thought they were all ancient
I miss their warm presence
the spongey cakes and questions about what I was gonna do
hey I wish I had more people askin’ me stuff like that now
the kids- all rival attempts-rival versions
now I’m ready for my family gatherings
it can’t happen
I’m not at the party early
I’m here late
they’ve all gone
legends of spring
legends of summer
legends of autumn
legends of winter
cool breezes
summer winds
storm clouds
local climate patterns
bad luck
family gatherings
liver spots - war wounds - footy injuries -bugs – curses – omens –rumours - reputations
bad names
family gatherings
I ran away to get another family
set to music, people seemed freshly minted
there was no background they they didn’t print
I wanted that scene around me
I wanted in
the flash and the noise and the drama
I turned away from the family
the stories – the legends
the kids – the other kids
the illnesses – the pregnancies
the alcohol and the drugs
the drunk adults
the drunk children tryin’ to be adults
the church – the football – the horses
legends of spring
legends of summer
legends of autumn
legends of winter
cool breezes
summer winds
storm clouds
local climate patterns
bad luck
family gatherings

My cancellation came through
it’s all over for me
there was no formal ceremony
it was an innocuous bump
an innocent turn
you just stepped off the curb
the mob turned
formed so quickly and turned
I had runs on the board
so I thought
my cancellation came through
hallelujah they hate me so
lyin’ in the street
in the hot sun
for days- years- I hope
I need a spell
my old friends even
shakin’ their heads
just a stray word
a gay word
a fat word
I called her a woman
I know
I deserve everything I get
I’m free now
it’s a new world
a new morning
people think the worst
I do
just like me
we’re all on the same pages
I’m free
I have achieved herd immunity
once you’re cancelled
you’re done
your passport is stamped
they cut out the corner of it
you’re deleted
returned
in the cut out bin

Creative Creep
04:44
|
|
||
what did Brian Wilsons dad Murray say when he boxedc him in the ears?
“I’m a genius too y’know!”
“I’m a genius too y’know!”
creative creep
there’s been some creative creep around here
what are you doin’ here, sir?
you’re supposed to be back there with your beans
creative creep
who are all these people?
who are all these creeps?
this place was cool
used to be
just us
the elite
there were rules
strict club rules
door policies
advertising people
and not like Bewitched
there’s been some creative creep
a lotta creative creep
around here
don’t fence me in and get in too
back off
let me be
let me be a creative creep
back off
let me be
let me be
a creative creep
you’re standin’ too close to the flames

Love Story

Love story
we fell into each others mouths
couldn’t hear a thing
that song! How does it go?
what happens?
teens breath
breathed death into me
I was a boy
she was a girl
so she was ahead of me
she stank, kind of
she had a tongue
her breath was rank
I wasn’t ready for that
Love story
teen breath
like fire and smoke
teen dragon
queen hell
I was green – a green horn
fogged up my eyes
wished I had glasses
but there was no filter handy to call on
Love story
young love
tight stuff
wan’t sweet
wasn’t wrong or right
it was a fright
I was a fool
nothing happened and everything happened
Love story
dragon tears
dragon teen
that farm girl
hot pimples on her forehead
her hair was bone dry
like mine
Love story
breathed into me
life and death
Love story
we fell into each others mouths
couldn’t hear a thing
that song! How does it go?
what happens
Love Story

I Said No To Myself
04:10
|
|
||
I said no to myself, and I listened
to whom
to whom it may concern
to whom – to me
Twoomey
gloomy Irish name sprung up on a flank at Victoria Park in the thirties
I said no to myself and I heard it across my mind
all the ways
the empty playing fields in the off season
doesn’t mean I’m always gonna answer
in the negative or positive
I’ll keep myself in suspense until the end
thank you
I said no to myself
who am I to deny my sly highs? My lows?
sometimes I don’t feel like hearing
I keep schtum
all my life I said “I hear what you’re sayin’”
I heard what I was sayin’
I’ll keep schtum
I’ll be on a need to know basis

I’m gonna be old in the end times
at the mercy of people like you
people like me
oh we lived through the boom
oh what a time we had
we stepped over the people ssleeping rough
I’m gonna be old in the end times
people are gonna walk past me just like I stepped around that guy back there
shivering and shaking with his hand outstretched
I’m gonna be that guy
I’ve been the other guy
I’m gonna be old in the end times
the robotics
the algorhythms
the algo-bummed
the algo-rhythmaticians
the algae
blooms
thems the algae breaks
the algae on the surface
the algae on the street
I’m gonna be old in the end times

They Walk Among Us
02:33
|
|
||
They walk among us
sovereign states
porous citizens
opaque mates
florin entities
shilling villagers
quid pro go pro lingo
old guinea town folk
their bodies are their own
they’ve done the research
bitcoin buddies
sterling folk
pounds shillings and pence
over the fence
no sense
L.S. Demons
halfenny people
cryptos
deep mates
they walk among us
they walk among us

he’s talkin’ out of his base
he’s talkin’ over his base
he’s talkin’ around his base
worry

I'll Cluster It
03:22
|
|
||
See somethin’ I like
I’ll cluster it
fool myself
stupid
it’s worked for me
I’ll cluster that
I clustered this
that’s where we’re at
I put all my clusters in a row
tidy
gimme a mess
I’ll cluster it
make a fist of a hand
I’ll cluster it
that’s my game
I like to cluster
I’m neat
I like patterns
I walk out the door – any door
and tunr right
no
the gate
yes, right
that’s the way into town from my old house
see somethin’ I like
I see it everywhere
I put it everywhere
stupid
but I get by
I got by
dumb luck
lucky shot
gimme a story
a beginning
I’ll cluster an end
I can’t help it
it’s my way
my flow
I like to throw ssome shapes onto stuff
gimme a blank
I’ll cluster it

I’m already missing the lockdown
even though it’s not over
some light breakin’ through
the spell is falling
we knew what we had to do
just sit tight
we ate so many chick peas
the days were regular
we couldn’t do anything wrong
we didn’t have to be anywhere
we went down to the park and stretched out on the long grass
we took pictures to make it real
sent them out through our phones
I’m already missing the lockdown
we couldn’t do anything wrong
whatever we did was right
we just had to spend the time
I had my lockdown clothes
a shirt, a jumper and pants
I laughed how I was gonna burn them one day

Poor Covid
05:10
|
|
||
Poor Covid
poor dumb covid
takin’ the rap for so much
that was bad already
a portal – a hole – that appeared
and everything got chucked in
poor covid
thread thread
the great unravelling
the levelling- the reflection
I loved all of that
the lockdown
the purpose
the intensity
the right
the light on everything
the walks
the nice
poor covid
poor dumb covid
I gave you a chance for a new start
I showed you a new window
I framed stuff for you
I took away the frame
I took your blinkers off
I levelled the field for you
I gave you time
time alone
time together
I gave you questions
questions that needed answers
questions that could be answered
I stopped the world
I stopped the planes and the boats
everybody was on square one
I showed you how things – normal things – didn’t have to be normal
I gave you a breather
I cut you some slack

You Were Gaslit For This
06:09
|
|
||
Ever get the feeling you’re doin’ something right?
Ever get that note? that message? No?
who are you listening to?
who’s telling you stuff?
who’s interpreting?
why do you need that filter?
it’s the way of the world to bring you down and bum you out
you’re too young – you’re too old
you’re too early – you’re too late
you’re a boy – you’re a girl
you’re a woman – you’re a man
you’re too loud – you’re too quiet
you’re too rough – you’re too soft
you’re too heav\y – you’re too light
you’re too slow – you’re too fast
you’re too strong – you’re too weak
this is the only way to go
this is the only thing to do
you are the only one for this
you got this
you were gaslit for this

Madly, Softly, Hardly
08:46
|
|
||
I’ve been lookin’ for an old friend- any old friend
I need to knowwho I was, maybe that’s who I am?
my old friends are old
older than I feel I am
soft and silly
am I too?
madly, softly, hardly
maddening, softening, hardening
broke into an old house
hey it’s an old school house now!
wandering through the rooms, opening drawers
expecting to find something behind one of the doors
lookin’ through some old window
electric cables jumping about
madly, softly, hardly
when I was growin’ out of my body and into my mind – should I have stopped at some point?
did I?
you know how you see a big flock of birds – starlings- flying in an enormous formation
turning and moving as one, suddenly here then swooping, gathering like a wave, a rush , but there’s no shore, no floor
maybe we’re like that?
in time?
loose and alive like that and we scare ourselves and take flight and then hold tight in a dive but it felt different and we look over at ourselves , a part of ourselves, a shape we once had, in time, yes – that was us – but…
madly, softly, hardly
maddening, softening, hardening
and there are some who can arrange and employ words in shape and sound that dazzles and lived, beside us, for a while, then all the pieces fall away and the words fail.
There are others that command those words, like those flocks of birds
playing, living so well they build cities and high walls and other worlds, turning this way and that, page after page, tome after tome, brick by brick, stone by stone
madly, softly, hardly
maddening, softening, hardening
you’ve been there!
you’ve ridden that flow, tapped that stream, the lode, the vein
why are you digging down into the mud to get to that old school house? That day when you were composed? Sure! At that party at 2am – making toast and talking with soft power at cruising speed? But you were raw and a knock at the door stopped that scene and it’s never happened again.
It’s like that corner behind the door where you used to hang your coats. In that house you lived in, in that city you lived in for a while in that other country, that really great winter that closed in around you and it was so quiety, snow on the street, on the wind. TRhere was no wind! It was strangely warm and there was a series of forbidden films on the television. The television!
Of course you want to go back. But so many elements were at play.
So many notes in that chord.
What note was at the bottom, and what sweetened it at the top?
So many elements. And the tempo of the times, was it set to a train or a plane? Or a pay checque? And the banks closed.
